About Bates College

Bates College is a private liberal arts college located in Lewiston, which is a city in the US state of Maine, in Androscoggin County, with a population of approximately 38 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2007 census, which makes it the 2nd largest city in the state.


Bates was established in March, 1855, and was founded by abolitionists. It is a leader of the SAT optional movement for undergraduate admission, being one of the 1st schools to become a part of this movement, in 1984. It is also one of the 1st schools in the US to be coeducational from establishment, as well as the oldest continuously operating coeducational institution in New England. It has an enrollment of about 1700 students and confers Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees.


Athletics

Bates' athletic teams are known as the Bobcats and they compete in the NCAA Division III New England Small College Athletic Conference, and Colby-Bates-Bowdoin Consortium, in a total of 31 varsity sports, for both men and women. The school's official color is garnet, but black is traditionally employed as a complement.


Notable Alumni

Many notable individuals have taken classes at Bates, including Civil War hero Holman S. Melcher, mentor to Martin Luther King Jr., Benjamin Mays, prominent biologist and professor Herbert E. Walter, published bioengineer John R. Hetling, and author and 2009 Pulitzer Prize winner Elizabeth Strout.
